when i scaled the recipe up (original for 5 US gallon) to 45 litre the amounts of grain where kinda odd numbers slightly over the size of my sealed bags of grain. It worked out i was about 100 grams short in the darker grains and rather than open a 500gm pack of 2 grains for a few grams of each i added 100 grams of carafa III.
Up until that it was the closest i have ever came to following a recipe.
was aiming for 45 litres of 1050 ish wort as per usual was a bit lossy and ended up with about 42 litres 1060 ish (will check in morning) so close enough. I know i could have added water but ive always been a bit wary of adding water after the boil.
I might have to re look at my definition of a rolling/vigorus boil.
All in all not a bad first brew day of the year
7th January.
Bit of an update checked trial jar looks about 1.060
Split into two fermentation buckets one i used WLP004 the other S04, the WLP004 went off very quick (1 litre starter) S04 wasnt far behind. Both buckets inside house to maintain temp.
Had a delivery yesterday selection of grains and hops and a 60 litre fermenter…not sure how easy this is gonna be to move about so might have to wait till milder weather before i get to use it as im thinking id struggle to carry it into house..
Tues 19/01/16 bottled the WLP004 version and the So4 transfered to shed
Brew day number 2 Tues 19th January 16
Needless to say my brewday wasn't without hiccups I had chosen a recipe from Brew your own British real ale (hopback summer lighting). Tues morning put 60 odd litres of water on to heat.Crushed grain then went to measure hops I knew i had some Challeger in the freezer so grabbed tem and weighed what i had, went to shed to grab a new pack. I have a storage box full of unopened hops at this point i discovered i had no more challenger. Had a rummage and decided on Citra which i have had for a while but not got around to using. recipe as follows 9240 grmas pale malt (end of a bag) 750 grams torrified wheat 50 grams citra 90 mins 40 Grams Citra 15 mins (pack was light) All went pretty well , was first time using the thermo pot and it held temperature very well and false bottom worked well, very little in the way of deadspace. batch split between 2 fermemters one with S04 the other with Mangrove jack workhorse. Both bubbling away nicely. Will update when bottling/kegging
